With this project, my goal was to practice storyboarding for musical sequences. I tend to instinctively adhere to a very deliberate, continuity-focused cinematography; I thought this project would be a good chance to challenge myself to work more creatively, as musical sequences can be much more loose with time and visuals than grounded “real” scenes.
I chose a particularly story-focused pop song (from the amazing band Fountains of Wayne), rather than a song from a musical, because I thought that working without an existing visual would better simulate a real animation job. I soon discovered that the song’s tendency to jump backwards-and-forwards in time was a real challenge, and I’m proud of the solutions I came up with.
While I appreciated the restriction of working in pace with the song, it was certainly a challenge to come up with visuals that clearly told the story while matching the rhythm of the music. I appreciate my recent film studies of Edgar Wright’s work for providing a good scaffold to work from.
While time restraints prevented me from finishing the song, I hope to come back to it and give the rest of the story some visuals when I get the chance.
